Five Paragraph Essay Five paragraph essays are used in the college situation to measure basic writing skills. Often these essays are timed. To do a good job, look at what is being asked. Isolate the elements that are of importance, and then organize your ideas.
An outline is one way to start writing. Have an introductory paragraph, three supporting paragraphs and a closing paragraph. Make sure that the introductory paragraph tells what is to be expected in the essay and the closing paragraph wraps it up.
In the introductory paragraph, set the tone of the paper. The supporting paragraphs reinforce the thesis statement in the introductory paragraph. The paragraphs need to flow into each other. Make sure that details that illustrate each point are in the supporting paragraphs. The closing paragraph should restate your thesis sentence and summarize your opinion. Go ahead and write in the active voice throughout the essay. It will make the paper more forceful. Leave out the pronouns "I" and "you" in this type of essay. Vary your sentences. Don't make all the sentences the same length. Try to use variety when beginning sentences. Use different opening words. Look at the essay objectively. Make sure that it flows smoothly and is logical. Check to see if the supporting paragraphs do relate to the introductory paragraph. Check your spelling and your grammar, especially agreement and sentences issues. If it is possible, have a friend or fellow student read over your paper.
