How does AIDS affect the South African economy?
- It reduces the size the of the workforce, skilled and unskilled.
- It causes serious social problems that are likely to cause economic problems in the medium and long term. For example, the early death of adult parents often means that teenagers have to bring up their younger siblings (brothers and sisters) instead of continuing their education. This in turn reduces the number of future skilled workers.

Because so many slaves were being taken away from Africa and transported to the Americas and Europe, the African economy was declining because of it. The Atlantic Slave Trade …transported millions of Africans to the New World in order to use them for agricultural labor as well as for servant work. With so many Africans gone from their homeland, the economy dwindled. The south's economy was based on farming, and still is today. The Confederate lands were small and the population was around 9 million. Over half of the population was slaves.… As for the Union, there were twice as many, 15 million. For the south, the small population was a bad thing. Less men could not be replaced. Women and children stayed home and took care of the farms. God bless if the slaves did seek revenge on the slave owner's wife -- All kind of things would happen. The south had plenty of food to distribute. The problem was: How? The north blocked all ways of transporting food. Many southern soldiers died and were abandoned on field. Towns would be destroyed and abandoned. Farm lands were also destroyed. They could not be farmed on any more. The south had to look for undestroyed places to farm. This led the south's economy poor. Years later, carbetbaggers and scalawags will come down from the north and try to help the south. This will lead into a time of Reconstruction, which will also help the south.
