HIV reduces your ability to fight infection because it attacks your CD4+ also know as your T-cells. Your body is at a constant struggle to keep your body healthy by fighting against infections. The T-cells are like the Generals in this war. They tell other soldiars (B-cells,) whats to do in this war against HIV and other infections.

HIV enters the T-cells, and become "HIV factories". More HIV is released into the bloodstream to enter more T-cells. Eventually, the T-cells die, and HIV starts winning the war. Your immune system doesn't work anymore because there aren't Generals (T-cells) telling the soldiers what to do.

How does an STD reduce the risk of getting HIV?

STDs do not reduce the risk of getting HIV. In fact, STDs increase the risk of getting HIV. Any STD elicits an immune response. Its almost like ringing the dinner bell for HIV. Most infections pull CD4 immune cells (cells that HIV infects) to the site of infection (usually). This increases the risk of infection.

How does hiv affect the body and disrupt its homeostasis?

HIV prevents the body from maintaining homeostasis by disrupting the body's ability to fight disease. When a person's immune system is healthy and functioning, it is able to ward off many pathogens, virtually unnoticed. Our skin, saliva, tears, mucous membranes, all parts of the immune system, are effective barriers against many bacteria, virus and other microorganisms. However, when the immune system is damaged in some way, in this case by the HIV virus, that balance between pathogens in the environment and our ability to fight them off effectively, is destroyed. Ultimately, the body's immune system is depleted. Disease sets in. The body can no longer fight disease off, and the person begins a decline that will eventually result in death.

Why would a person with AIDS also have pneumonia?

AIDS is caused by a virus called HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. If you get infected with HIV, your body will try to fight the infection. It will make "antibodies," special molecules to fight HIV. A blood test for HIV looks for these antibodies. If you have them in your blood, it means that you have HIV infection. People who have the HIV antibodies are called "HIV-Positive." Being HIV-positive, or having HIV disease, is not the same as having AIDS. Many people are HIV-positive but don't get sick for many years. As HIV disease continues, it slowly wears down the immune system. Viruses, parasites, fungi and bacteria that usually don't cause any problems can make you very sick if your immune system is damaged. These are called "opportunistic infections" Basically the cells that are in your body that fight off infection, get infected and the body is therefore no longer able to fight off illness, one of those being pneumonia.
