I haven't seen much fighting out of beardies but here's what I've seen: it usually starts out with the head bobbing up and down and their beards turning black and puffing out, then some hissing may take place and then they lunge at each other every so often trying to bite and claw each other. It is sometimes a stand off though.

well, to advance the story, talk to SPOILER DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU ARE THIS FAR AND WANT THIS TO BE SPOILED Greygnarl. fight and defeat greygnarl, drop off all your party members at the quester's rest, equip all the dragon warrior gear (after defeating another monster, an aggrosculpture, i believe) and talk to him. there will be a scene. now, you DON'T actually fight the black dragon, Barbarus, until you get to the final dungeon. END SPOILER
