By passing an electrical current from one pin to the other. The greater the moisture content, the higher the resistance. By measuring the resistance, it gives an estimate of the average moisture content. I think.
2009/03/14 - Correct, but exactly backwards .... Moisture (water) can be a conductor. Dry wood is an insulator. The higher the moisture content, the lower the resistance and vice-versa. Wood with a high moisture content gives a low resistance to the tester and conducts the test voltage better.
