Swans are quite fierce opponents - they will take on almost anything to protect the brood. run up to one some time, you will see ;) Mostly they will make themselves appear bigger - wings out, standing tall, etc, and hissing a lot. I think they can also give a fairly good nip with the beak

Swans are birds and all birds are vertebrates - i.e. have backbones. Their long necks are actually continuations of vertebrae.

To some animals they are - most not. Frogs and other reptiles...but other animals, no.
