It depends on how much you are having your team trying to grow but a good time frame to set is about a year. It was on the news last week and at the two year mark they had done a wonderful job in the Caribbean rebuilding the coral that was no longer there. I believe they had regrown a mile or so worth of coral, but don't quote me. I didn't DVR it so I can't go back and view it again. However, it was pure fascinating.

There are two ways in which coral reef grow. First, they grow by secreting more limestone around the base of their cup. This creates the limestone skeleton that grows outward and upward. Second, some coral polyps by creating clones using asexual reproduction, while others procreate sexually using eggs and sperm. Once new polyps appear, they float to the bottom of the sea floor and attach to a solid surface, either starting their own colony or joining a pre-existing colony. Polyps connect to each other at their base and are connected laterally using a tissue called coenosarc. Polyps combined with this tissue make up the living portion of the coral reef that can be seen by the naked eye

A coral polyp grows when the new planula* lands on a nearby coral. Then, as time passes the planula* turns into a coral polyp. The coral that the polyp is on feeds the polyp and the polyp starts to grow. When the polyp is grown enough it can then spawn (which means to have sexual activity). As time passes the polyp becomes a grown coral.

The formation of a coral reef begins when stony coral larvae, known as polyps,

attach themselves to hard surfaces such as submerged rocks along island or

continental edges. These polyps reproduce and become a colony, which features a

base attached to the hard surface, an edge zone where new coral polyps are

produced, and an upper surface that is exposed to light.

You can't just "grow" coral. In order to get coral, you will have to take a chunk of coral that has already grown and place it securely onto your rock. The coral will then grow on that rock as it continues to age. It takes hundreds of years for coral to form it's base. -Kayla

Coral reefs are underwater structures made from calcium carbonate secreted by corals. Coral reefs are colonies of tiny animals found in marine waters that contain few nutrients. Most coral reefs are built from stony corals, which in turn consist of polyps that cluster in groups. The polyps belong to a group of animals known as Cnidaria, which also includes sea anemones and jellyfish. Unlike sea anemones, coral polyps secrete hard carbonate exoskeletons which support and protect their bodies. Reefs grow best in warm, shallow, clear, sunny and agitated waters.

Why are there coral reefs in the Arctic Ocean?

The Arctic Ocean is too cold for coral reefs. The coral reefs cannot grow under cold conditions. They can only grow in waters between the arctic circle and the equator. They must grow under neutral tepurature water. Even if they are too hot they can't grow.
