Iron isn't put into cereals, it is a naturally occurring element in many of the constituents of them, mainly grains. Certainly some manufacturers add additional iron, probably in the form of mineral salts (like Iron Sulfate), that they get, well, from an iron refinery... gross.

You mean how to get it out so you can see it?

You pour it into a blender and turn it on. Add water so that it covers the cereal, and stir it with a spoon or turn the blender on once again. Put in a magnet and pay extra attention to the bottom, where the iron is likely to sink. The iron will probably appear as black fuzz, and is best seen when wiped on a napkin.

The iron is dissolved in a solution of sugar and the other minerals to be added to cereal, and then sprayed on as a coating.

Most of it gets absorbed into your blood, where it's needed.
