Okay, first off- if your piece is marked for gold content- ignore that. I can mark a BMW 14k after a quick gold paint job.
First test- Use a magnet to see if the piece is magnetic, if it isn't- your next step is to buy a nitric acid test kit; They run about $20-$30 on E-bay. Rub the metal onto the stone firmly, drip some nitric acid on the rubbing on the stone- if the rubbing stays strong, your piece is gold. If it turns orange your piece is likely a lower karat.
If the rubbing; Disappears or turns green- your piece is fake.

But without a testing kit, there really is no proof positive way to tell. Silver test kits cost around 10.00. But for testing gold, you're going to have to spend around 100.00. Worth every cent, if you're doing this for your bread and butter.
