Society's mechanisms to maintain social control can best be described when placed in three categories: Legal, Medical, and Informal social control. Legal social control is when the use of the judicial system directly affects human behavior. In some regions of the world it is unacceptable for women to have intercourse before marriage. As a result, very few women do, and those who do are dealt with in the judicial system and are socially reduced. Medical social control utilizes medication such as Prozac for depression, Trilafon for schizophrenia and mania, and Ritalin for attention hyperactivity deficit disorder (ADHD). Medical control also relies on counseling/therapy sessions including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), group therapy, and hypnosis. Each one of these medical means of social control aim to normalize socially deviant behavior. The last and most common mechanism is Informal social control. Humans of every culture experience this almost daily. This is the dirty look someone gives another when they say something out of line or the verbal criticism dished out to someone for their illogical choices. Informal social control can be as simple as being ignored for being "uncool". Inversely, society will also reward favorable conformity to norms. If someone has a good sense of humor and can light other people up, it is probable that they are well liked and desired in social settings. These are all examples of Informal social control.
