Pretty much the same way they travel across any terrain. Vehicles and foot are the two most common. In some areas horses and camels are used, the US Army even tried camels in the deserts of the US. Much of the time now they fly over the desert on helicopters.

How does the sidewinder snake adapt to the desert?

Sidewinders have adapted to the desert by using a "sidewinding" motion, which they only touch the hot sand with certain parts of their body at a time, therefore only allowing a small amount of skin to touch the sand. This keeps them cooler, and also allows them to travel across the sand much faster.
