The energy source is the same as for heating anything.

Gas,Electricity, Burning any fossil fuel. in a boiler (furnace) with water running in heat exchanging coils or manifolds. When heat is needed a pump circulates the hot water through the radiators and back to the furness.

Can you turn the main water off and leave your furnace on?

This depends on the type of furnace system you have. A forced-air furnace should be completely independent of the water system. An older, convection-based (no pump) hot water system will have an expansion tank, and will not need to have the main water on, except to replenish the system, which should happen infrequently. A closed-loop system could possibly over-pressurize as the water is heated, with the mains valve closed, and would trigger the pressure relief valve, dumping a few cups of water every time the furnace cycles until the system was dry; eventually, with the pipes in the furnace dry, the furnace heat would melt and destroy them.

How is the thermal energy produced by the furnace transferred to the water?

by the way the steam condenses back to water

Why are the radiators warm but water is cold in a central heating system?

Central heating systems usually heat on a different system from the hot water heater, unless the main heater is a combination furnace/hot water heater. If this is the case, it could be because the outflow of hot water is greater than the ability of the furnace to heat the water.

How do you plumb a water line to a coal furnace to preheat the water prior to going into a electric hot water heater?

Is the furnace a hydroponic system? If it is you only need to get a heat exchanger (As you don't want the water to your heater flowing through the furnace) and plumb it as another zone in your house. If not you need to find a device for heating water that fits your furnace. and plumb the heat exchanger to that. I believe an heat exchanger is required by code in either case.

What should the hot water furnace water pressure be?

A furnace does NOT have water... A boiler has water .. NICE trick question

If the water is shut off will the furnace work?

If you have hot water heat or steam heat, it will still work. Gas or electric heat has nothing to do with the water system.

Can you turn off the water supply to the furnace for a few weeks and still get baseboard heat?

If it is a hot water system and not steam, once it is properly filled & bled of air no more water should be needed unless there is a leak. Regardless of whether it is steam or hot water it is a Boiler not a furnace.

Is it better to turn the furnace off or leave it on?

Obviously a furnace - or indeed any other appliance - will use no energy at all if it is completely switched off. If you don't want to spend any money on heat energy then of course it is "better " to turn the furnace off. It depends what you mean by "leave it on": even if you leave the electricity and gas on, (or oil if it's an oil burner), if the temperature of the room or building is high enough to make the air-termperature thermostat switch the furnace's burners off, the furnace won't actually be running and consuming very much energy. All the furnace would consume in that condition is a few Watts of electrical power to supply its control circuit and maybe a few Watts more to drive a water circulating pump for the radiators, if that is how your system works. Of course you could turn the furnace's main control switch "off" so that the furnace will stay off even when the air temperature falls enough to cause the control thermostat to switch over to put the furnace's burners on... Then you would save a few Watts of energy but would lose the convenience of having the furnace heat your home and water automatically. Instead you would have to switch the furnace on yourself every time you wanted some heat. So, do you want "convenience" or "inconvenience"? It's up to you to decide...

Can lack of home fuel oil in a steam furnace cause clanging pipes?

No That is usaully do to an over pressure of the water system

Does a water furnace use a 40 amp breaker?

Depends on the manufacture of the water furnace. Look at the data sheet or data plate on the furnace of contact the manufacture.

What could be the cause of water leaking from a new furnace?

Water leaking from a furnace most likely occurs from the heat of the furnace which transforms into a liquid. The best way to avoid the leak is to put your furnace at a lower temperature.
