Meiosis results in four daughter cells (gametes) which have half the number of chromosomes of the original cell. They are therefore called haploid cells.

During meiosis, the number of chromosomes in the daughter cells(n) is half the number in the original parent cell(2n) and so the DNA is half. The first step of meiosis(meiosis I) is exactly the same as mitosis. The DNA content is doubled during the interphase. After which the Prophase I, Metaphase I , Anaphase I, and Telophase I follows. The cell does not cleave instead undergoes through the same cycle (meisosis II), ProphaseII metaphaseII anaphaseII and telophase II and then cytokinesis which results in four daughter cells with (n) number of chromosomes.
