I think that it depends on the counter height! If it's a kitchen counter that you work at, then bar stools might look a bit odd next to it. Plus, there's the practicality aspect too; if you want to sit by the counter top then bar stools might make it too low to use. However, if when sat on the bar stools, your elbows can comfortably rest on the counter top without having to stoop too low, you should be OK. You can also get height adjustable bar stools, with hydraulic levers or gas height adjustment.
