Matthew 4:13 describes Jesus as being brought up in Nazareth, a town near the regions of land belonging to the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali, in the north.

Jesus was enrolled in Bethlehem as belonging to the tribe of Judah, for both Joseph and Mary were from the house and family of David and hence native to the land of Judah, in the south - The Apocryphal and Legendary Life of Christ, Chap. V.

Relocations of tribes were due to the deportation to Assyria people of those tribes belonging to the northern Kingdom of Israel conquered in war by Assyria - II Kings 15:29, II Kings 17:3-6.

This led to the relocation to the southern Kingdom of Judah of the conquered and then the subsequent relocation of those in the Kingdom of Judah to the depleted tribes of the northern Kingdom of Israel.

Ownership of land according to tribal custom belonging to wives was inherited by their husbands, so land passed onto daughters by their fathers because of the depletion of male relatives, was in turn passed on by inheritance to their husbands. Husbands of another tribe were able to settle in the land of their wives and that land through inheritance changed tribal ownership, see Numbers 36:2 ff.

This is how those of the tribe of Judah were able to settle in other districts - for they inherited local land no longer owned by members of the tribes of those districts.

Jesus as a member of the family of Joseph and Mary resided in Nazareth, among those who were native to his clan.

Jesus is believed to have lived as a child in Nazareth, although born in Bethlehem. This is based on the gospel accounts, where evidence actually connecting him to Nazareth is a little uncertain.

The first gospel to be written is now known to have been Mark's Gospel, which in some English translations refers to Jesus of (or from) Nazareth five times (Mark 1:9,24, 10:47, 14:67, 16:6). However, in the original Greek, four of these references actually refer to Jesus the Nazarene. Now, calling someone a Nazarene could arguably mean that he is from the town of Nazareth, but also there was a sect known as the Nazarenes and this could otherwise have meant that Jesus was a leader of the Nazarene sect. One reference (Mark 1:9) does say 'Jesus from Nazareth', but there is a grammatical anomaly that might indicate that the original text also said 'Jesus the Nazarene' and that it was altered by a later scribe. At the end of the century, the Jews banned 'Nazarenes' from synagogues, by which term they appear to have meant Christians.

The next gospel to be written was Matthew's Gospel, which was substantially based on Mark and contains some 90 per cent of the verses in Mark. The first reference (Matthew 2:23) says that after returning from Egypt the young family went to live in a city called Nazareth "that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene." No prophet is known to have said that Jesus would be called a Nazarene, unless the author of Matthew considered the author of Mark a prophet.

In the remainder of Matthew's Gospel and throughout Lukeand John, Jesus is unambiguously linked to Nazareth.
