The person whose background or education is strong on languages may make the change back and forth between the two languages. But generally, Spanish will pose fewer obstacles. The exception regards those Spanish speakers who live across the border from Portugal in Europe, and Brazil in Latin America. It's an easy jump with them in regard to all aspects of communicating in the two languages: writing, understanding, and speaking.
