Best Answer

Classical Greek civilization, specifically Athenian culture, was responsible for the development of the basic western democracy (and even invented the term) and social order, and the spread of it to the "known" world.

Much of modern philosophy, medicine, science and especially mathematics is also based on original Greek thought (with Arabic contributions forming the other major foundation). Roman culture and civilization borrowed heavily from - to the point of plagiarising - the Greeks. From there, virtually all of Europe was influenced by or depended on either group in some way.
