High chief
a high chief's son who performs the traditional Samoan dance in big events
Matai is translated as a high chief of a village/family.
The Tuiga is a samoan head-dress. It is worn by high chiefs of the village. It is also worn by the taupo ( daughter of chief) or manaia (son of chief). It is worn during all traditional events.
Samoans wear what everyone else wears. Our formal attire is a puletasi for ladies, and alo'a and iefaitaga for gentlemen. Occasionally, traditional costumes are worn when a big event happens and special occasions, when a high chief, high chief's son or high chief's daughter performs the Samoan traditional dance.
Samoan do not wear mats, but only when a taupou (chief's daughter) or a manaia (chief's son) performs a Samoan dance for dignataries at big occasions and events. Tongans do wear mats though as a formal wear.
When a Taupou (a High Chief's daughter) or a Manaia (a High Chief's son) performs a Samoan dance, they wear traditional attire, using fine mats or tapa, and wearing head gear denoting the fact that they are a daughter or son of a high chief. Our formal wear to any formal function is a Puletasi (for ladies) and Alo'a and Iefaitaga (for gents). For a lady or a gentleman to wear a puletasi and alo'a/iefaitaga to any formal function, is a mark of respect shown to the guests at whatever event they attend, and the respect accorded them by those guests.
