No. There will be a two letter date date code.
The date of manufacture is determined by the Colt model type and serial number. See: www.proofhouse.com/colt/index.html
I don't believe Crosman ever made a model 40 rifle. I have no reverence to any model by that number made by Crosman. However they did make a model 140 from 1954 to 1968 in four variations.
The lower the serial number the younger the pistol is
Made 15-17 years ago.
Sprinfield Armory's website. They have been very helpful to me.
See http://www.fulton-armory.com/tea/m1serial.htm Oldguns.net. Scroll down the menu on the left to Manufacture Dates - US Military.
Your best bet in this case is to contact the manufacturer and see if they will search their records for a date of manufacture. It's possible that the serial number gives a clue as to the approximate or exact date of manufacture, but that can only be determined by contacting S&W. This type of information is rarely available in the public.
All I can tell you about this gun (Pistol) is it was made by Crosman. The (126) at the beginning of the model indicate Crosman. Unfortunately the Crossover list form Sears to Crosman is long gone and only a few of the numbers are known. Here is what I suggest. Crosman has a list of most all their Air guns / rifles. The list has the Owners Manuals, Parts List and date of Manufacture listed. See the link below for this web site
