What is the life expectancy of a shar-pei?

The Shar-pei breed is amongst the oldest in the world. They are classified as an "ancient breed"- showing the fewest genetic differences from wolves, of all Dog Breeds. As with most ancient breeds, the Shar-pei is of Asian descent (most ancient breeds are from China, Japan, Siberia, or Tibet, all of which are contiguous in region). There is indication that the Shar-pei existed as far back as before 200 BC, as imagery from ancient pottery seems to depict the breed.

Recently had to put to sleep my precious 18 year old Shih Tzu...he was not sick he just couldn't do anything with his Arthritis and it got bad when he couldn't go potty...he could go he just couldn't walk to get there...He was a fighter till the end. We were so blessed to have him so long.

Most western Shar-peis (those in North America) have a distinct genealogy, the vast majority being offspring of those introduced by way of Hong Kong in the 1970s as an attempt to save the breed after the Chinese government cracked down on dog ownership in an effort to conserve resources (primarily, food). This unfortunately resulted in very poor breeding for several generations, which has adversely affected the generations we find today. Western Shar-peis can be expected to live from 7 - 10 years, which may be slightly less than those descendants of better breeding in the East. As a result of breeding (and particularly western breeding/gene pools), the Shar-pei species is prone to extensive health problems which can significantly impact the health and longevity of the dog.
