These are some of the factors you have to consider. It could take anywhere from a few minutes to a few days, months or years. If you are checking for a person's criminal background, the more personal information you have (Date of birth, aliases, social security number, etc...) will speed the process.

For job applicants, three days is the normal length of time taken in North America. However for bonded jobs, security-related, or government, and for non-citizens, the length can take two weeks.

Anything longer is not productive for employers.

In special cases the applicant can be hired immediately, on condition that the background check will turn out to be acceptable later on.
