Chapter 13's last from 3 to 5 years, during which time the debtor makes payments on his or her Chapter 13 Plan (see 11 U.S.C. 1322(d)). Once the Plan is paid in full, the Court will normally issue the Discharge "[a]s soon as practicable after completion by the debtor of all payments under the plan...." (11 U.S.C. 1328(a)). Normally debtors receive their Discharge 30 to 60 days after the Plan is paid off. In some cases a Chapter 13 discharge can be issued prior to the Plan being completed pursuant to 11 U.S.C. 1328(b) if something happened that kept the debtor from being able to finish the Plan and other criteria are met, but this is rare.
