There are a wide variety of dental hygienist programs out there. The American Dental Association does not certify programs. There is a Commission on Dental Accreditation that oversees schools but this is voluntary. Ask questions before you sign up for classes. Find out what the requirements are at your chosen school and if they are certified by the CODA.

3 years of college. (Should get a bachelors degree instead), then get into dental school. (if you major in chemistry it would help dramatically to get into dental school--- do more research on that, maybe) then you either be a general dentist or take 2-3 years to specialize in periodontist.

Extra info :

General dentist make an average salary of 194,100.

Periodontists make an average salary of 114,200-269,500.

(: hope it helped.

Becoming a prothodontist requires firt obtaining a D.D.S from an accredited dentistry school. This takes 4 years and most dental schools require at least 90 hours of college course work and they prefer a college degree (4 years). After completing dental school there will be 2-3 years of graduate study in prosthodontics. So it works out to be about 10 years of study.

How are a DMD and a DDS different?

DMD is a Doctor of Dental Medicine. DDS is a Doctor of Dental Surgery There is no practical difference between a DDS and a DMD. The curriculum for each is identical. Each dental school chooses which degree to award its graduates. As long as the school is accredited, the graduate is eligible to sit for the national board as well as any regional board or state licensing board.
