That dependson a number of factors...
1) It may take a while for someone to find & read your question.
2) There might be no-one qualified to answer your question (perhaps if it is on a 'specialist' subject).
3) The system might have placed the question in the wrong section.
4) There are certain subjects you can't talk about here - your question might have been 'trashed' due to its content.

A question should not remain in the unanswered category after it has been answered. If the answer has to be approved, the question will stay in the category until a moderator approves the answer.
The time varies. As you can see, there are plenty of unanswered questions. Easy to answer/obvious questions are usually answered quickly. Good questions are easy to comprehend and therefore are usually answered by someone looking through the questions in a category. Categorization is very important, because it allow the right people to see the question.
