Archeologists have discovered iron nails in the heel bones in the remains of people who were crucified. This material would have been strong enough to be driven through bone and wood and would also hold the weight of the body.

In 1968, in an excavated tomb located just NE of Jerusalem, the remains were found of a Jew who was executed in the first century. As shown by subsequent studies, an iron nail 11.5 cm (4.5 in.) long was still piercing the right heel bone. This nail may be similar to the nails employed by the Roman soldiers to impale Jesus Christ.

We do not know what size the nails were that held Jesus to the cross. These nail would have been hand forged as they did not have that type of manufacturing in that time. They would have had to be big enough to hold a man to a cross with a good sized head so that the hand/wrist would not slide off the end. I doubt that they would have been as big around as a railroad spike, but they would have been as long.
