Some German Jews had been brought up to be 'more Geman than the Germans'. Of these, a very small number thought that their intense nationalism meant that they would be exempted from Nazi antisemitism and/or snobbishly assumed that it only applied to Ostjuden (East European orthodox Jews) and not to them. Most of them were disabused of these notions in 1933.
