All the statistics below are current as of March 2012:

The Catholic Church has the third highest total number of individual parishes in the US, behind Southern Baptists and United Methodists. However, because the average Catholic parish is significantly larger than the average church from those denominations, there are more than four times as many Catholics as Southern Baptists and more than eight times as many as United Methodists. In the United States, there are 195 archdioceses/dioceses and one 1 apostolic exarchate:

  • 145 Latin Catholic dioceses
  • 33 Latin Catholic archdioceses
  • 15 Eastern Catholic dioceses
  • 2 Eastern Catholic archdioceses
  • 1 apostolic exarchate for Syro-Malankara Catholic Church

Currently, 8 dioceses are vacant (sede vacante):

  • Baker, Oregon
  • Baltimore
  • Denver
  • Pensacola-Tallahassee, Florida
  • Pittsburgh (Ruthenian)
  • Salina, Kansas
  • Steubenville, Ohio
  • Tyler, Texas
