That number -- 282 -- is way too low. There are over 20,000 accredited degree programs offered by some more than 8,000 colleges and universities in the US which are accredited by agencies approved by either the US Department of Education (USDE), or the USDE-sanctioned Council for Higher Education (CHEA).
The Chronicle of Higher Education, alone, in 2010, listed and ranked some 5,000 PhD programs in 59 fields... and that was, by no means, all of them.
Based on the ratio of 5,000 PhD programs to all degree programs, I would surmise that as many as 2,000 accredited colleges/universites in the US offer some kind of PhD program. Of course, it would have to be properly researched to say, for sure; but if one includes all doctoral-level programs, including even those not titled "PhD" or "Ph.D" or "Ph.D." (so then, for example, Doctor of Theology (DTh or ThD) degrees, or Doctor of Ministry (DMin) degrees, or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degrees, or a large number of other degrees which have "Doctor of" in their names) then the number of both schools and degrees skyrockets, I dare say.
But, one way or the other, 282 is just way, way, way too low. That we know, even without doing a stitch of research.
