Spanish is the official language of 20 independent countries: Argentina, Bolivia (co-official Quechua and Aymara), Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea (co-official French), Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama , Paraguay (co-official Guaraní), Peru (co-official Quechua and, in some regions, Aymara), Spain (co-official in some regions with Catalan, Galician and Basque), Uruguay, and Venezuela. Spanish is also the official language (co-official language English) in the commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Though the state has no formally designated "official languages," Spanish is officially used and formally recognized at the state level, alongside English, in the U.S. state of New Mexico, where it is spoken by nearly half the population (many of whom claim direct descent from Spanish colonists). The vast majority of its speakers are located in Spain and the Western Hemisphere.
Of course, many people that do not live in these countries speak Spanish.
