The "degrees" (although being called by the same name) are of different size, and the zero points are different on each scale.

1 degree Celsius equals a change of 9/5 = 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit and

1 degree Fahrenheit equals a change of 5/9 = 0.555555555 degrees Celsius.

The Celsius scale is based on the temperatures at which water freezes and boils, which are defined as 0°C and 100°C.

The Fahrenheit scale can be defined by those same temperatures, but with the values of 32°F = 0°C and 212°F = 100°C.

It varies. An increase of 5 degrees Celsius is equal to an increase of 9 degrees Fahrenheit. At minus 40, both scales show the same temperature. Here are the conversion formulae:

F = (9/5)C + 32

C = (5/9)(F - 32)
