______

And that's exactly measured how? There's more to a language than it's dictionary. It's really hard to say how many words there is in any given language, since a language always lives, evolves, changes, new words are being added while old ones are getting left out or change meaning totally. Unless, of course, it's already dead.

It's not possible to count the words in any language, because there is no universal definition of what a word is. The estimates for most languages is between 40,000 and 160,000 words.

English, however, is an exceptional language, in that it is an international language and it readily accepts foreign words. English is also not governed by any language academy, so there are no rules about new words.

English is estimated at 170,000 to 250,000 words
