The normal non-commemorative Australian 50 cent coin has the kangaroo on the reverse as a part of the Australian Coat of Arms since 1966.

The normal non-commemorative Australian One Dollar coin has five kangaroos on the reverse since 1984.

The Australian predecimal Penny and Halfpenny featured a kangaroo on the reverse from 1938 to 1964.

The Australian predecimal Threepence and Shilling featured a kangaroo on the reverse as a part of the Australian Coat of Arms from 1910 to 1936.

The Australian predecimal Sixpence and Florin featured a kangaroo on the reverse as a part of the Australian Coat of Arms from 1910 to 1963.

The Royal Australian Mint does not specify the species of kangaroo on the Australian One Dollar coin. Most references to the coin refer to "5 kangaroos" only.

At a guess, I would suggest a "Big Red kangaroo" since it is the biggest and most impressive looking and is found in most parts of Australia.
