40,000 North Carolina soldiers died in the war, almost equally divided between those who were killed or died of wounds, and those who died from disease. This was more dead soldiers than any other state, though NC was not the most populous southern state. Virginia had the most people, and about 37,000 Virginia soldiers died.

Somewhere around 125,000 North Carolinians served in the Confederate military, so almost one out of three died.

No one knows how many civilians died or had their lives shortened by starvation or lack of medicine, which could not be imported due to the blockade.
