The amount of credits required for a doctor will depend on the program of study. The minimum time required to earn a doctorate varies by country, and can be a short as three years (excluding bachelor's and master's studies). However, some candidates can take anywhere from five to ten years to complete. The median number of years to completion of doctoral degrees for all fields in the US is seven years. Students are discouraged from taking unnecessarily long to graduate by having their financial support (stipends, research funds, etc.) relinquished. Additionally, while in the past doctoral applicants were required to first complete a master's degree, many programs will now accept students straight out of undergraduate studies.

If you are receiving an associate's degree, it typically takes 60 credit hours. A bachelor's degree typically takes 120 credit hours. Graduate level degrees can vary. The general thinking is that it will take you three times the number of credit hours in actual hours to do work for the class. For example, you should be spending about 9 hours a week doing work for a three credit hour class, however most teachers assign more work than that amount.

It depends on the specific program of study. Typically, it is approximately 60 credits. However, the length of time is dependent on how long it takes a student to complete their dissertation (original research), successfully.

It varies by the program and university. Each program will have different requirements, as will each institution. State laws enter into it as well. Check with the counseling office of university you are most interested in attending.

Usually four years after you bachelors degree.

After a bachelor's degree, the normal course is to earn a Masters. This can take between 18 months and 3 years. Then, you go for the PhD. If you are a full time student, this can take 2-3 years for the coursework, and then you need to write your dissertation. At George Mason university, they give you 7 years to complete coursework, and 7 years to write the dissertation. Hopefully, you won't take that long.

It helps if you know what you want to research or study for your dissertation early, as this will make the process shorter.
