There are 6236 aayaats (verses) in the Quran (including Bismillah of only the first surah (first chapter) and Bismillah is not included for other surahs (chapters). Otherwise, if including Bismillah of the other surahs (or chapters), number of aayaats (or verses) will be 112 + 6236 = 6348 aayaats (or verses).

Because, like in the Quran, at the start there is noBismillah (as opposed to most other suras which do start with Bismillah). This is probably because when it was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (saw/pbuh), it was never said. In a different surah (Surah Naml), Bismillah is recited twice.
