That's not something you can directly calculate - otherwise people would never have heart attacks at all because we could predict who would be having one and when. The more "bad" cholesterol you have floating around, the greater chance you'll have a heart attack or stroke, but there is no direct formula for this.

Another complication is that the body needs cholesterol to build healthy nerves and to make several important hormones.

There is also evidence that the "bad" cholesterol rich plaques that form in arteries would not deposit if the arterial wall tissue was fully healthy and undamaged. There seems to be some other as yet unknown disease process going on that causes damage long before these plaques form, making the plaques only a symptom rather than the promem itself. Identifying and solving this may prevent the so called "cholesterol" problem from ever being an issue.

You don't have to have a particular weight to have a heart attack... To have a heart attack you could have to much cholesterol or have been born with a heart condition.

What is the role of cholesterol in heart?

Cholesterol is either absorbed from food or made in the body. This synthesis can take place in most cells in the body including the cells of the heart, however cholesterol does not only come from the heart. Cholesterol can lead to clogging of arteries around the heart leading to heart problems.

How high does your cholesterol have to be to give you a heart attack?

I'll start by saying that there is no sure figure that will tell you when you'll get a heart attack.Cholesterol essential comes in two general forms; bad (LDL) and good (HDL)LDL cholesterol will clog arteries, whereas HDL will do the opposite, so it's a balance between the two types that determines risk.If you have a LDL level of 5.0 (mmol/L) or above, then you are at risk of a heart attack. If you have a cholesterol level of over 6.2 then you are at a high risk of hear attack. If you're above these, there's no telling how long it will be before you suffer a heart attack, if at all, but it is highly recommended that you take measures to lower your cholesterol if it is above 5.0. There are margarine spreads these days that can reduce your bad cholesterol.

Why is cholesterol really that bad?

cholesterol is bad..... think of cholesterol as oil that's in your bloodstream not really mixing with it cause its oil. now if that cholesterol finds any irregularities in the vessels and gets stuck then other chol. can attach to it and get stuck. now this may take years but eventually this closes off a vessel (usually in the heart) and then u have a heart attack and the tissue that was getting blood from blocked off artery dies. yes ... dead tissue in your heart.... ur right ... it doesnt sound good. 99% of everyone that has ever had a heart attack was because of cholesterol. don't ask about the 1%. but on the same token the liver makes chol. so you cant get rid of it all... u can only accentuate the good chol and suppress the bad chol.

What is the consequence of high ldl and low hdl in a patient?

LDLs are 'low density lipoproteins' which are the 'bad cholesterols' in your blood, HDLs are 'high density lipoproteins' which are the 'good cholesterol' (remove unwanted cholesterol from the blood and take it to the liver).Effectively you want more HDLs than LDLs otherwise you end up with too much cholesterol in your blood which can 'clog' up your blood vessels causing a cardiovascular attack/coronary heart disease.
