While the League of Nations, Britain and France were dealing with Mussolini (the prime minister of Italy), Hitler was rebuilding Germany's army in the Rhineland.
Britain and France were appeasing Mussolini so that they will get Mussolini's support but Mussolini turned to Germany
Due to Hitler's repowering, the League collapsed!!
The abyssinia crisis was just the loaded trigger of the failure of the League but Hitler's growing power during the abyssinian invasion was what pulled the trigger
because it was the first real flaw of the league of nations when it allowed big boy benito to invade abyssinia
the league talked to Mussolini, whilst he was sending troops into abyssinia. The league didn't want to loose Italy from the league of nations and decided to give part of abyssinia to Italy. However Mussolini wanted all of abyssinia to expand his empire, so instead he ignored the league and invaded abyssinia. Then the league banned weapons sales and put sanctions on rubber and metal. The abyssinian emperor Haile Selassie appealed to the league but the league did nothing, in fact they secretly agreed to give abyssinia to Italy. This was called the Hoare Laval pact.
- Mussolini readied to invade Abyssinia (Ethiopia). He wanted war and glory, so Abyssinia asked the League of Nations to help. - The League attempted to reason with Mussolini but he used this time to send an army to Africa, so the league suggested a compromise to give only a part of Abyssinia to Italy. - Mussolini ignored the League, and continued to invade Abyssinia. - This resulted in the League banning weapon sales and putting sanctions on rubber and metal. - Italy conquered Abyssinia, so the League had failed
One of the biggest failures to stop territorial aggression for the League of Nations was when Mussolini invaded Abyssinia. As a result Italy took over Abyssinia.
Britain and France wanted Mussolini as an ally against Hitler the league of nations failed to protect their countries.
The league became ineffective and soon was abandoned as the world war 2 broke out.
Italy left the left the league after the Abyssinian crisis. Mussolini (current Italian ruler) wanted to restore the "glory days of the roman empire", i believe the main reason Italy left the league was that Italy knew the league could not work because the economic sanctions did not work because the USA was not part of the league and the USA not being a part of the league sped up the failure of the league of nations.
The league of nations failed in Abyssinia because it was too weak and frightened of Italy to stand up against Italy. the league was frightened if they upset Italy's prime minister Benito Mussolini, that he may not help the league if Hilter were to attck again, so they basically let Italy do what they wanted because the the league was weak and defenseless. Hope that helped
The Stressa Front fell apart because Mussolini of Italy invaded the African nation of Abyssinia in 1935. The Stressa Front was between Britain and France (major nations in the league of nations at the time) but when Mussolini invaded Abyssinia, its prince Haile Selassi appealed to the league and it was clear Italy was the aggressor nation. So the league of nations applied limited economic sanctions on Italy (oil was not included) and Mussolini felt offended and instead joined forces with Hitler.
The Abyssinian Crisis.
In December 1934 there was a dispute between Italian and Ethiopian soldiers at the Wal-Wal oasis - 80 Km inside Abyssinia. Mussolini claimed this was Italian territory. He demanded an apology and began preparing the Italian Army for war. He invaded in October 1935
The first example is the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. The League of Nations disapproved but had no means to stop the invasion. Mussolini then invaded Ethiopia in 1935, and the League of Nations was unable to take action against him. Finally, in 1936, Hitler began to remilitarize Germany, and there was no reaction from the League of Nations.
