The number staggering. I can't find all of the UK, but you bought 700 million in 2005. Most likely these were thrown away. When you ad that to the 1 billion the USA throws away, you have a serious pollution issue.
Rather then chasing false environmental issues like man induced global warming, this situation is obviously real. Should we not be trying to reduce this problem? Banning portable MP3 players would do much to help. At least we could require rechargeable to reduce by half this mess. (They die fairly fast too.)
Don't forget the terrible pollution made by mining nickle and lithium!
There are hundreds of batteries that are thrown out because we don't use all of the power that are in them and when we throw them out there is always a bit of chemical left inside them that we do nit know about. When we throw a battery away that has been in our kids toys and they stop working than we throw them we out thinking that it could ruin our stuff, and new battries the=at have never been used will start to leak and will also ruin our stuff so we throw out hundreds and hundreds of batteries that are throw out in the world everyday.

Very few. Usually aluminum cans are used before being discarded. For example, they are filled with softdrink, then sold, and then discarded. So technically, not many aluminum cans are actually 'wasted' each year because they are 'used' in the first place.
