Best Answer

Honey isn't usually harvested monthly but the amount of honey produced by a hive can vary enormously dependent on the size of the colony and the amount of forage available locally for the bees to collect nectar. Some areas have an abundance of nectar bearing plants and other areas have virtually none.

What is the advantage of farm honey over wild honey?

1. It is much easier to harvest--a wild hive, usually in the hollow of a tree, a small cave, or other natural cavity, is difficult to get to; the brood area of the hive is unknown until the hive is taken apart (severely damaged or destroyed). A wild hive will suffer severe damage or be destroyed when the honey is harvested. In a "farm" hive, the brood area can be isolated from the harvest area with a queen restrictor. 2. It is more likely that the source of the honey is known; e.g., If the farm hive is near a blossoming orange grove, the nectar collected is transformed by the bees into "orange blossom honey".

How much honey is produced by bees in one year?

To see them through the winter, the average colony of honey bees needs about 35 pounds of honey in their stores. They may make more, and it is this surplus that beekeepers will collect. Beekeepers may even take most of the honey, but will replace it by feeding the bees with sugar syrup. The amount of honey that can be collected depends on a number of factors: the size of the colony; the weather through the summer; the amount of available forage plants; and the amount of space in the hive, among other things. At the end of the season there could be anything from no honey at all to 50 to 100 pounds in a hive, and although not common there are records of much more from one hive in a season.

What is used to calm the bees?

A beekeeper will puff a little smoke into the hive. The bees respond to this by gorging on honey and a bee that is full of honey is more docile and much less likely to sting.
