There is a really great place to buy dye on line that is super cheap and good! It's called Colorado Wholesale Dye and their website is www.bestdye.com . you can buy dye in one ounce sizes for less than 3$. or in 2 ounce sizes for less than 4$ if you got 3 colors in 2 ounce sizes that's enough dye for like 24 shirts! They also have great instructions and support. Just remember to order the soda ash "dye fixer" to set the dye. That fixer costs 1.75 for a pound and a pound will dye about 20 shirts. so for less than 20$ you can get enough dye to dye a bunch of stuff! They also sell dye in Large quantities too for professional dyers.

Bleach them then dye them.
The term "tiedye" refers to a dying technique whereby one knots up fabric before it is dyed in order to produce patterns within the dyed material. It works because if you knot the fabric, the dye cannot reach into the knotted areas of the fabric and tends to produce an un-dyed area in the shape of a starburst pattern on the fabric.
