Buildings collapsed. Electrical systems were shorted. A wave of secondary fires resulted, adding to their Holocaust.
Flash burns from primary heat waves caused most of the casualties to inhabitants. Others were burned when their homes burst into flame. Flying debris caused many injuries. A fire storm of winds followed the blast at Hiroshima as air was drawn back to the center of the burning area. Trees were uprooted. The bomb took the lives of 42,000 persons and injured 40,000 more. It destroyed 39 percent of all the buildings standing in Nagasaki. According to U.S. estimates, 40,000 people were killed or never found as a result of the second bomb.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki wasn't destroyed but majority of it was wrecked. The atomic bombing on Hiroshima took place on August 6th 1945, whilst the Nagasaki atomic bombing took place 3 days later on August 9th 1945.

According to the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the population in Japan in October 1940 was estimated to be 73,114,308; in November 1945 the population was estimated at 71,998,104. Japan was visibly a thriving country that was hit very hard by the bombing. The Little Boy atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima level over fifty percent of the city and killed seventy thousand people instantly and they estimate over 100,000 people in total. Many died from the burns, radiation poisoning and cancers or other diseases. Outside the initial blast zone a lot of damage was done too but not as much as the initial blast zone did. They rebuilt the city and it is very beautiful now.
Rome destroyed Carthage at the end of Punic War #3. They enslaved much of the population and plowed salt around the city's perimeter as a symbol that the city would never be a major threat again.Rome destroyed Carthage at the end of Punic War #3. On August 6 and 9, 1945, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed by the first atomic bombs used in warfare. The first atomic bomb ever to be used in a military operation was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, Japan On August 6, 1945 at 8:16:02 a.m. Hiroshima time. The bomb, affectionately named "Little Boy," exploded 1,900 feet above the courtyard of Shima Hospital, with a force equivalent to 12,500 tons of TNT. By the end of 1945, 140,000 people had died as a direct result of the bombing. Within the following five years, another 60,000 would die of bomb-related causes. - The bomb killed men, women, and children indiscriminately. It killed both military personnel and civilians. Although the city produced military items and housed soldiers, it was not selected as a "purely military target" as President Truman had promised. There were six civilians in Hiroshima to every soldier. - The second bomb, called "Fat Man," exploded over Nagasaki, Japan, at 11:02 a.m. on August 9, 1945. It exploded at 1,650 feet with a force of 22,000 tons of TNT. 70,000 people lost their lives in Nagasaki by the end of 1945 due to the bombing. A total of 140,00 died within two weeks.

According to James May from Top Gear - not enough, as it left the race track!. About 90% of Nuremberg was destroyed in just one nighttime bombing raid. Subsequent bombing raids probably destroyed another 5%. So in reality - all of Nuremberg was destroyed.
See related question below. The bombing of Hiroshima was to end the war. It was not about freedom for Americans. If Japan took over America or the Germans had done that the Americans would not have freedom.

An action in a war, is a thing no one can change.
71 people were killed. Much of the city was destroyed. Many airplanes were destroyed at the airport. Many people left the city and never returned. Much of the city had to be rebuilt, making it a very different city to what it was before the cyclone hit.
Practically, yes. But one cant entirely destroy a city, even if nukes are used. The buildings may vanish - as they did in the Hamburg bombings, but much of the infrastructure remains, including roads, and underground sanitation installations etc.
