Best Answer

After absorbing 48 pounds of carbon dioxide a year, a tree is capable of providing enough oxygen for two people over the course of a year. An acre of trees can produce enough carbon dioxide to equal a car driving over 26,000 miles.

It requires 22 trees to produce the amount of oxygen consumed by one person. (An acre of trees produces enough oxygen for 18 people). This data comes from the Northwest Territories Forest Management site.

"One estimate indicates that a large tree whose trunk is 39 inches in diameter at breast height releases 0.67 pounds (0.31 kilograms) of oxygen per day. A smaller tree of 9-12 inches diameter at breast height releases only 0.13 lbs (0.06 kg) per day. For comparison, according to NASA, a typical adult would use 1.85 lbs (0.84 kg) of oxygen gas per day in the process of respiration. From these numbers you can see the importance of trees to oxygen production on earth. According to the web site http://www.treepeople.org/, in one year an acre of trees can provide enough oxygen for 18 people." http://www.auburn.edu/communications_marketing/askaubie/101205.html

27.3% of CO2 is composed of Carbon. Trees are composed of about 40% carbon (conservative estimate) so for every 100 kg a tree weighs, 40 kg are carbon.

Allegedly the average tree (probably 60 foot) weighs 682 kg. That is about 275 kg of carbon per tree.

275/0.273 = 1007 kg CO2 absorbed x 72.7% (amount of oxygen in CO2) = 730 kg of oxygen made in the lifespan of the average tree.

the oxygen released by a tree is equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide consumed, which can be shown as follows:-

12CO2 + 11H2O =C12H22O11 + 12O2

How do you produce oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from a biosphere on Mars?

Mars' atmosphere contains mainly carbon dioxide, which means that in order for the oxygen/carbon dioxide cycle to occur, Mars has to go through the same procedures that Earth went through. A simple organism must be formed that can undergo photosynthesis, converting carbon dioxide into oxygen. Once it has enough oxygen, a new organism will probably form that are able to breathe oxygen. The key point is to have many photosynthetic organisms in order to convert enough carbon dioxide into oxygen.

How does cutting down forests affect the carbon cycle?

It affects the carbon cycle because when photosynthesis happens plant take in Carbon Dioxide and release oxygen. When the trees in the forest are cut down photosynthesis is reduced. Meaning, carbon dioxide will remain in the air that we breathe.

Why is the carbon dioxide and oxygen cycle important?

Carbon dioxide is important in the atmosphere as it is one of the greenhouse gases that has been helping to keep the earth warm for millions of years. Not too much, not too little, but just the right amount. Unfortunately we are now adding too much carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, causing global warming and climate change.

What is the reactant and product in cellular respiration?

In the equation for cellular respiration the reactants, which go into the equation, are glucose and oxygen. The products, that come out of the equation, are carbon dioxide, water, and energy in the form of ATP.

Does partial pressure of oxygen increase during exercise?

You can consume up to ten times as much oxygen in exercise as at rest, and produce the same increase in CO2.

There is 21% oxygen in the atmosphere and 300 ppm (0.03%) carbon dioxide. This translated to 700 times more oxygen than carbon dioxide.

More oxygen than carbon dioxide.

How much carbon dioxide is formed when 24.0g of carbon is reacted with 100.0g of oxygen?

24.0 g of carbon reacts with 64.0 g of oxygen to form 88 g of carbon dioxide.

What would happen if you breathed in too much carbon dioxide?

Air contains oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and other compounds. We take carbon dioxide into our lungs all the time, but our lungs keep the oxygen. However, if you were in a room with ONLY carbon dioxide, you would die--not from carbon dioxide per se, but from lack of oxygen.

How much carbon dioxide is made from oxygen and carbon during a fire?

If combustion is complete (which it usually is not) you will get a carbon dioxide molecule for every carbon atom or for every oxygen molecule depending on which runs out first.

Do any plants produce as much carbon dioxide as humans?

No, it's the other way around. Plants intake Carbon dioxide and put out Oxygen. In the theory of how the world formed, this is how the atmosphere got to contain Oxygen, from plants spreading over the continents and producing Oxygen.

What is carbon dioxide rich blood?

Carbon dioxide rich blood, which is red blood cells lacking oxygen but high in carbon dioxide concentration. These blood cells have circulated through the body and given up much of its oxygen while collecting waste carbon dioxide. The pulmonary artery carries this blood from the heart to the lungs, where it picks up a fresh supply of oxygen and eliminates carbon dioxide.
