Best Answer

Yes. Until the 1960s many countries of the world used silver in their coins. With the rising value of silver most , or probably all of them, have replaced the silver with other metals. Still, many countries use silver in special coins struck for coin collectors.

Prior to 1965, the dime, quarter, half-dollar and dollar coins were all 90% silver. During WWII, nickels were minted with 35% silver but returned to our current composition after the war ended. The 20 cent piece and some 3 cent pieces were also minted in silver but those coins ended production long ago.

That depends. In the US all half dollars, quarters, and dimes made before 1965 were made of 90% silver. Currently the US makes no silver coins intended for circulation. The US mints make special bullion coins made almost completely of silver.

It depends on the country of origin, year, denomination and in some cases the mint mark or type of coin.

Are silver dollars made of pure silver?

Silver dollar coins (1794-1935) were never made of pure silver. It's too soft and the coins would wear out very quickly. They (and most other silver US coins) were made of an alloy of 90% silver and 10% copper. Circulating US dollar coins were made of copper-nickel from 1971 to 1999. The composition was changed to gold-toned brass in 2000. Modern "eagle" coins with an artificial $1 denomination are made of 99.9% pure silver, but these coins aren't intended for spending.
