How old was Joan of Arc when she was captured by the English?

Joan of Arc was 19 years old when she was sold to the English by the Burgundians and was executed.

Why is Joan of Arc a legend?

Joan of Arc became a legend because, as a mere teenager, she organised French resistance against English domination, leading the charge which attacked the English and forced them to retreat from Orléans in 1429. As she led further charges, she helped turn the Hundred Years War unequivocally in France's favour.Joan of Arc was victorious, but in 1430 she was captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English. She was accused of heresy and witchcraft. Ultimately, she was burned at the stake, on 30 May 1431.

Who were St. Joan of Arc's accusers?

Jeanne d' Arc's enemies were the enemies of France - the English. She lived in the end of the 15th century AD/ CE and she was proclaimed Saint by the Catholic church later. She suffered a martyr's death on fire.

Why did they burn Joan of Arc?

Joan of Arc had soundly defeated the English at the raising of the siege of Orleans in May, 1429 and at The Battle of Patay, where over 2000 English soldiers were killed that June. This prevented the English from gaining control over all of France and having Henry VI, their king, become the king of France, but rather Charles VII, who Joan had conducted to Rheims to be crowned. The English therefore feared and hated Joan, so that after she was captured by their ally, the Burgundians, who sold her to the English for 10,000 livres, they decided that they couldn't execute Joan for defeating them in battle, but they could get pro-English French clergy to try her for heresy. This mock trial was full of legal errors, Joan didn't even have a lawyer! All they could find against Joan was that she wore men's clothing, which was contrary to some obscure passage in The Bible. The reason Joan wore men's clothing on the battlefield was to wear armor to keep from being hurt and in prison she wore men's clothing to keep from being raped by her low class English guards. So Joan was burnt at the stake on May 30, 1431. 25 years later the pope ordered a review of this trial at the request of King Charles VII and so many errors were found in it, and that it had all been a "put up job by the hatred of the English" that Joan was found not guilty of heresy and the entire trial declared null in July, 1456.

Did Joan of Arc fight against the English?

Actually, the French were responsible for Joan's death. The Burgundians were French who favored British rule. They captured Joan and dold her to the British. She was tried in a Church court of French clergy loyal to Britain and her executioner was a Frenchman. The British wanted her dead because she had embarrassed and humiliated the British army. They thought that, if they removed her from leadership, the French army would become demoralized and the British could again gain the upper hand in the conflict.

What were the rumors of Joan of Arc?

The English greatly feared and hated Joan of Arc, because she turned the tide of The Hundred Years' War by raising the English siege of the French city of Orleans, which was the key to southern France, on May 1 thru the 9th, 1429, just 9 days. She then led the French crown prince to Rheims, where he was crowned King Charles VII of France. The Burgundian allies of the English captured Joan on May 23rd, 1430, and sold her to the English. The king of France could have ransomed Joan or traded her for one of his important English prisoners, like the Duke of Suffolk or Lord Talbot, who was one of the greatest English leaders, but he did not, much to his shame. The English had Joan accused of heresy (they could not execute her for defeating them in battle, so they had to make up something), that she was a witch. Joan was found guilty in this mock trial and burned at the stake in Rouen, on May 30, 1431. 25 years later the pope had a nullification trial for Joan instigated, which found her innocent. Her mock heresy trial had numerous errors. Joan didn't even have her own lawyer; it was all planned out by the English, who hated her at the time and was completely illegal.
