I know you can drink half a gallon of water a day if you want to - I personally have often consumed that much. Water consumption can vary depending upon other factors such as the amount of perspiration that you are doing on a given day. I would think that it would be possible to consume an entire gallon of water in a day, but more than that would be risky. If your stomach starts to hurt from being too full, take a hint and stop drinking.

The maximum amount daily would vary dependent upon the volume a person's stomach could hold and how rapidly their body processed the water and passed it. However, if you're asking for a specific upper limit - there really isn't one. If you were in a water drinking contest and attempted to drink large amounts of water, you could technically induce "water intoxication" which can be potentially fatal.

What's your cutoff limit? In a healthy average human, the kidneys are able to excrete approximately 1 liter of fluid per hour. However, stress (from prolonged physical exertion), as well as disease states, can greatly reduce this amount.

If you meant what is a good amount for people to drink, technically a person requires the same amount they lose throughout the day from excretion, perspiration and other forms of water removal. Which of course varies from person to person.

You would also have to consider the weight of the person, their metabolism, their general health, their amount of physical activity and much more.

If you begin having a mild headache, your urine becomes a darker yellow color, or if it has a strong odor; if you have constipation or if you begin to have general aches especially in the lower back, you may have mild dehydration and should definitely drink more water than you currently are.

In short, use common sense - if you're thirsty, drink some water. If you feel like drinking some water, drink. It won't kill you unless you try to consume a higher amount than your body can process.
