The average healthy adult requires a minimum of one (1) gallon per person, per day for drinking and cooking. While you can survive on less, the "one gallon per day" rule is generally considered the minimum if you will be walking, working, or doing anything other than just purely surviving. Emergency managers generally recommend at least two (2) gallons per person, per day if you want to have enough water to maintain proper hygiene. While you can dispense with good hygiene for a few days, it will quickly lead to illness and injury that will reduce your overall chances of surviving an incident.
