However, they were expensive enough that the average man did not own a pistol. While he might own a rifle or shotgun, pistols were a "gentleman's" weapon, and a wealthy merchant or landowner might have a set custom made for them. The average soldier did not have a pistol- they would usually be carried by an officer.
