Clothes

The Cherokees wore very unique clothes. The women wore sleeveless dresses, made of deer skin that were belted at the waist and pinned at the breast. The men wore breechcloths made of deer skin. They wore belts until they were married. The men colored their bodies with paint or tattoos and wore earrings made out of stones or bones. The young children were naked in the warmer months. All of the Cherokee wore moccasins. As you can see, the Cherokee Indians used animals for pretty much everything!

Food

The Cherokee Indians farmed, hunted, and gathered. The women grew beans, squash, corn, sunflowers, melons, and pumpkins. They gathered nuts, roots, and fruit. The women also made Brunswick stew made of game, (squirrel, turkey, or rabbit) tomatoes, corn, and beans. The men fished and hunted. They hunted mostly bear, turkey, and rabbit with blow guns. The Cherokee used poison to stun the fish and then they just picked the biggest one out of the water.

Games & Entertainment

The Cherokee played many games. They played a game call A-ne-jo-di (stickball) that is like lacrosse. The sticks were made of hickory, and the ball was made from deer hide. They also played a game called Di-ga-da-yo-s-di (marbles). The marbles were chipped from stone the size of billiard balls. The fields were 100 ft. long with 5 holes that formed an L shaped object. They had to throw the balls into the holes. The Cherokee hade lots of instruments such as, the water drum, river cane flute, turtle shell "rattles". They also had a trumpet that was made of buffalo horns, longneck gourds, or conch shells. The most important instrument was the drum. As you can see the Cherokee Indians liked music and games.

Cherokee Today

The Cherokee tribe is still around today! Most of the Cherokee live in Oklahoma. The Cherokee also live in North Carolina, and their language is still the same and taught in schools and church services. The tribe in Oklahoma owns an electronics store, many casinos, and a golf course. The Cherokee tribe is still growing. Wilma Mankiller was the first woman chief. The Cherokee tribe rules!!

Houses

The Cherokee Indians lived in wigwams and longhouses. The towns had 30-60 houses. All of them were mud covered lodges. The families lived in homes made of logs roofed with split cedar logs. They had special houses for religious and political meetings called stockades. The stockades were similar to a fort but had no gate. There were overlapping fences at the entrance. As you can see the Cherokee really used their natural resources.

Legends and Customs

The Cherokee Indians told many stories. Some of these stories are The First Fire, Legend of the Ballgame between the Birds and the Animals, and Why the Mole Lives Underground. They told these stories for entertainment and to explain about nature. They had a lot of traditional ceremonies. On the first new moon of spring they celebrated the new growing season. Ten days after the first moon of fall, was the Cherokee New Year. On the Cherokee New Year they had a feast, burned old clothing, and lit a new fire in the council house. All of the Cherokee legends and customs were about nature.

Cherokee is the common use form of Tsalagi, a First Nations People or Native People - commonly referred to as Native American's, American Indians or simply Indians (although the common references are politically incorrect and the use is discouraged). The name may have originated by what other tribal nations called the tribe, rather than the tribes own definition; this was common practice in naming the tribes.

The Cherokee Nation (or Tribe, both usages are correct) is a Federally recognized tribe that has existed on the North American continent for at least 20,000 years. They were a tribal political body recognized in European law c.1532 (F. Victoria) as the property owners of a great deal of land in what is now the states of: Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, North & South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. Please note that these boundaries are not strict, as Native People did not draw such lines generally. The tribe was made up of 7 primary matriarchal clans, that spoke 23 different dialects of Tsalagi.

Through a series of treaties with colonial settlers and European governments the Cherokee allocated lands, and seceded partial ownership of these lands. During this same time the Cherokee adopted many European practices as they were similar: they started plantations, bought and used slaves, learned to speak & write European languages, used 'clothing' common to the period, etc. Sequoya, a Silversmith at the time, created the Cherokee writing system (the first and only independent native American writing system) in hopes of maintaining the Cherokee language, history and culture.

After the establishment of America as an independent nation the Cherokee were pressured to move by a series of actions initiated by the state of Georgia. Two US Supreme Court cases marked this era; Worcester vs Georgia & Cherokee Nation VS Georgia. Despite these cases and the earlier promises of the US Government the USA decided to forcefully remove all Indians, this move became known as the Trail of Tears.

Today the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma or Cherokee Nation is the federally recognized western band of Cherokee and the Eastern Band of Cherokee are the federally recognized eastern Cherokee.

The name the the Cherokee people call themselves is Tsulagi. When the Anglo explorers first encountered the Cherokee, they had a guide who was a Creek Indian, When they asked him who these people were, he answered "Cherokee"- which is Creek for "Don't understand them.". The CH sound does not exist in the Cherokee language.
