The Ku Klux Klan was the name of a number of secret societies in the past and present. The original KKK was started in the aftermath of the Civil War, when the Southern ex-Confederates were bitter over their defeat, impoverished from the collapse of its agricultural economy due to not having a slave work force, and saw a huge upsurge of crime when robbery, rape and murder became commonplace.

It was Christmas Eve, 1865, in the little town Pulaski, Tennessee. Six educated, middle-class young men, who also happened to be ex-Confederate soldiers, met up to start a club for fun. They were John Lester, James Crowe, John Kennedy, Calvin Jones, Richard Reed, and Frank McCord. Like university fraternities, they were going to dress up in weird costumes, have bizarre rituals, and play pranks on innocent people, all in secret. Deciding to name their club with the Greek word 'kuklos', the root of English words 'cycle' and 'circle', and 'clan' because it alliterates, they proceeded to wear sheets, masks, tall pointed hats and galloped through Pulaski, posing as dead Confederate soldier's ghosts.

Their secret club grew fast, attracting white members from other Southern towns. Soon it was found that their late-night horse rides were frightening the local black people. The members, especially ones opposed to the growing power blacks had in politics, saw how this could be used to their advantage. The activity grew to include visiting black homes at late hours, intimidating the residents, and warning them to behave themselves, or else. Before long, violence broke out.

The KKK spread like wildfire throughout the South. A quote from historian Elaine Frantz Parsons: 'Lifting the Klan mask revealed a chaotic multitude of anti-Black vigilante groups, disgruntled poor white farmers, wartime guerrilla bands, displaced Democratic politicians, illegal whiskey distillers, coercive moral reformers, bored young men, sadists, rapists, white workmen fearful of black competition, employers trying to enforce labour discipline, common thieves, neighbours with decades-old grudges, and even a few freedmen and white Republicans who allied with Democratic whites or had criminal agendas of their own. Indeed, all they had in common, besides being overwhelmingly white, southern, and Democratic, was that they called themselves, or were called, Klansmen.' All of them wanted to hurt black people and people who supported them.

The original targets of the Ku Klux Klan were Republicans, both black and white, according to a new television program and book, which describe how the Democrats started the KKK and for decades harassed the GOP with lynchings and threats.

An estimated 3,446 blacks and 1,297 whites died at the end of KKK ropes from 1882 to 1964.

The documentation has been assembled by David Barton of Wallbu More..ilders and published in his book "Setting the Record Straight: American History in Black & White," which reveals that not only did the Democrats work hand-in-glove with the Ku Klux Klan for generations, they started the KKK and endorsed its mayhem.

"Of all forms of violent intimidation, lynchings were by far the most effective," Barton said in his book. "Republicans often led the efforts to pass federal anti-lynching laws and their platforms consistently called for a ban on lynching. Democrats successfully blocked those bills and their platforms never did condemn lynchings."

Further, the first grand wizard of the KKK was honored at the 1868 Democratic National Convention, no Democrats voted for the 14th Amendment to grant citizenship to former slaves and, to this day, the party website ignores those decades of racism, he said

A movie called Birth of a Nation and the establishment of statewide alcohol prohibition in Georgia that was widely being violated and that the Klan wanted to support and defend. Among other things, the Klan saw drinking as part of a cultural war between long established rural Americans and newly arriving urban immigrants from southern and eastern Europe, many of whom were Jews.

shortly after the American civil war, many Confederate officers who were devastated with the loss of the war dressed themselves and their horses up in white bed sheets. They were to be the ghosts of dead commanders still riding around and haunting the south.
