You should note that the colonization of Mexico was not peaceful: it was a violent conquest. That being said, many Mexicans were slaughtered, sold as slaves or died due to the smallpox disease brought by Spaniards. The native population who collaborated with the new rulers eventually mixed with them, becoming most of the Mexican population. That is why nowadays, most Mexicans are mestizos (mix of Amerindian and Spanish).
